VALEDICTORY

Rev. J. C. AND MRS YOUNG. VALUABLE PRESENTATIONS. There was a large and representative gathering of parishioners at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Monday evening when a social sendoff was tendered the Rev. J. C. and Mrs Young and Mrs Leslie, prior to their departure for Auckland, where Mr Young will take charge of the Mount Albert Church. Mr Herbert Mandeno suitably introduced the Rev. M. Hitchcock, of Matangi, who will have charge of the district till Mr Young’s successor is appointed. The latter’ gentleman then, in a few appropriate words, welcomed one and all, especially the visitors, and called on Mr R. C. Judd to give a violin solo, which he did in his usual charming manner. Then the Rev. M. G. Sullivan, speaking on behalf of the local clergy, paid a glowing tribute to the many sterling qualities possessed by Mr Young, whose good fellowship they had at all times enjoyed. They individually and collectively, thanked him for his ready co-operation and help to all. Mrs Mathews followed with a song, and later Mrs J. J. Bailey contributed some elocutionary items, all of which were well given and much appreciated. The Rev. M. Webber (Presbytery Moderator) spoke a few appropriate words after which the following presentations were made:— By Mr J. Old, an enlarged photograph on behalf of the Bible Class. By Miss I. Whitehead, bouquets to Mrs Leslie and Mrs Young on behalf of the Bible Class. By Mr C. Day, a fireside chair on behalf of the Mangapiko parishioners. By Mr S. Clark, on behalf of St Andrew’s congregation, to Mrs Leslie, a work basket; to Mrs Young a nest of afternoon tea tables and to Mr Young, a cheque containing a substantial amount. In making the presentations, all speakers referred in highly eulogistic terms to the high esteem and respect in which Mr and Mrs Young and Mrs Leslie were held throughout Te Awamutu district; to the good and beneficient work accomplished, and to their unswerving loyalty to the Church and their consistent efforts to promote its welfare. All joined in wishing them God-speed—good health, happiness and prosperity—in their future sphere of influence for good at Mount Albert. After the Rev. M. Hitchcock had thanked-the visiting Ministers and the programme artists, a sumptuous supper was partaken of, after which all individually met the departing guests to bid them farewell.
