Miss Phyllis North is spending the vacation in and around Auckland. Mr Lewis Marsh, of Auckland, is at present on a visit to Te Awamutu. Stoker J. Sommerville has been spending a few days’ leave with his parents, Mr and Mrs W. Sommerville, Ohaupo. Miss A. Macky, of Auckland, is spending a holiday with her parents, Mr and Mrs S. C. B. Macky, of Paterangi. Mrs H. J. Webber and Miss Joan Webber, of Paterangi Road, are spending a holiday in the Bay of Plenty district. Mr F. A. Laloli, brother of Mr G. Laloli, of Te Awamutu, has been reelected unopposed as Mayor of Roxburgh, Otago. Mrs A. Goodall, of Rewi Street, received a cablegram on Monday from her son, Corporal Jack Goodall, stating “fit and well.” Private Gordon Wallace, of Te Awamutu, has been transferred from the Papakura camp to Narrow Neck to be trained in the N.C.O. class. The many friends in Te Awamutu of Mr Harold Bennett will be interested to learn that he has taken over the lease of the Commercial Hotel at Normanby, Taranaki. Mr F. A. Laloli, brother of Mr A. G. Laloli, of Te Awamutu, has been re-elected unopposed as Mayor of Roxburgh, Otago. Mr F. Laloli now enters upon his sixth term of office. Mr Ernest Ramsbottom, son of Mr and Mrs Wm. Ramsbottom, of Te Awamutu, having passed his preliminary examination, has left for Levin to join the Royal New Zealand Air Force for training as a pilot. Mr G. H. Silvester, of Paterangi, has received cabled advice from his son, Gunner H. S. Silvester, serving with the Anti-tank Corps in operations in the Middle East, that he has arrived back at the base safe and well. The latest casualty list includes among the names of those wounded in action: Sergeant Archie Quinn, who formerly worked in Crotty’s timber yard in Mahoe Street, Te Awamutu, and Private Allan Robert Wheeler, of Oparau. The Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, announces that LieutenantGeneral Sir Guy Williams, late General Officer Commanding . the Eastern Command in Britain, succeeds Major 7 General Sir John Duigan, Chief of the General Staff, whose retirement is announced. Major T. A. H. Oliphant, M.C., N.Z.T.S., commandant of the Northern Military District school of instruction at Narrow Neck, has been relieved of his appointment to enable him to resume his civilian occupation. Captain W. J. Smeeton, M.C., N.Z.T.S., formerly adjutant, Papakura military camp, has been appointed to succeed him. PIRONGIA PERSONAL NOTES. Mr and Mrs Williams, who have been the guests of Mrs C. C. Berry. Franklin Street, have now returned home. Mrs Chas. Futter and family (Te Awamutu) have returned home after spending a week’s holiday with Mrs Gordon Bainbridge, Grozier Street. Mrs Des. Dallas and family, are spending a fortnight’s holiday with Mrs W. H. Bell, Beechy Street. Mr and Mrs Turner, of Auckland, are spending an extended holiday with Mr William Woolstone, Franklin Street. > Friends will be pleased to hear that Mr Lin. Prentice, who has been seriously ill, is now recovering. He is at present the guest of Mrs E. Moeller, Crozier Street. Mrs Eric Bell and family, are spending a week’s holiday with Mrs Edward Beet, Te Kawa. Miss Ivy Sifleet, who is shortly to be married, left this morning for a week’s holiday at Taranaki. The first lesson of home nursing was held last Wednesday and quite a number of ladies were present. Mrs Peart was the lecturer and all were very keenly interested. Mrs H. Gilman, Papatoetoe, is the guest of Mrs A. R. Mounsey, Franklin Street. A “house-warming” was held last Saturday night at the new residence of Mr and Mrs Jim Reid, Mountain Road. Items of the evening were competition dancing and singing. A solo, given by Mr J. Reid, was greatly appreciated and also a duet given by Mr and Mrs Hickie. The evening was brought to a close with the singing of “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows.” Mrs C. W. Hart and daughter Lola, of Auckland, are spending an extended holiday with Mrs G. Owen, Paterangi Road. The card evening last Tuesday evening, held in the Library, was very successful. Quite a number were present and the winners were: Ladies, Mrs W. H. Bell; men, Mr Q. Creagh. A dainty supper was served by the ladies. Mr and Mrs C. G. Berry left last week for several days at Helensville. Friends will be glad to hear that Mrs Charlie Bainbridge, who has been ill, is now recovering.
