DOMINION AIR RAID

FOUR THOUSAND LEAFLETS DROPPED AIR FORCE ASSISTS RECRUITING Christchurch experienced its first leaflet raid last Friday evening, two low-flying aeroplanes of the general reconnaissance squadron from the Royal New Zealand Air Force Station at Wigram dropping 4000 leaflets from above Cathedral square. The roar of the machines as they passed over the Square attracted the attention of many thousands of people and wild rushes were made to collect the leaflets as they floated down to the ground. The leaflets, which were headed, “Canterbury bomphlet No. 1,” and were designed to increase interest in recruiting, read: —• If this were a bomb, where would you be? Our British kindred are living under constant threat of aerial attack ahd facing it with fortitude. Remember what happened to Austria, Czechoslovakia arid Poland. Could we expect any different treatment? We are at war to defend their rights and ours. What are you doing to help? The Army needs men now. Recruiting Depot, Cathedral square. Because it was not previously announced, the “raid” excited much interest. The second aeroplane scored a “bull’s-eye” on the Square with its load of “bomphlets.” It was flying at an exceptionally low altitude.
