INDIVIDUAL REPENTANCE. “I atm still as radipal and revolutionary as in the ardent days cf youth, but I no longer believe in the Social Gospel. There is no such thing. It is a most calamitious misinterpretation of the New Testament Gospel. Society is institutional, mechanic..! even. The Gospel is not a message to States, nations, groups, classes, committees, etc. It is a message to persons. You cannot convince nations of sin. Committees and classes cannot repent. It is only individual, personal souls who can do that. Spiritual activity includes cultural pursuits, are essentially personal. It is your Beethoven—‘req! personal! individual—who /composes an Erojca Symphony. Committees can’t compose Symphonies, or /write poetry, or worship and adore. It is only individuals who can do these things. The Gospel of Christ, therefore, is a Personal Gospel. In the strict sense of the term, ‘naltional repentance* is just meaningless. Individuals can repent for the actions done on their behalf, That is, responsibility for collective deeds is an element of personality. Great Britain cannot repent.
