PUKEATUA SCHOOL

CALF CLUB COMPETITION. Messrs. J. C. Pattison and G. B. Melrose, representing the District Schools Calf Club Movement, visited’ Pukeatua School on Wednesday last,--but unfortunately no calves were presented for judging. The headmaster (Mr J. Forbes) apologised to the judges for the non-attendance of the four calves which were to have been presented for competition. The judges proceeded to judge the pet lambs (six) and children’s gardens. The vegetable gardens were an outstanding exhibit, comparing more than favourably with any school visited.

Mr Pattison addressed the children on the objects of the calf and agricultural clubs and made a special appeal to the children to present calves for next year’s competition. On presenting the certificates to the successful competitors in the remaining classes, Mr Pattison especially complimented the winners in the garden competition for the outstanding display of attention, variety and condition of the vegetables in the individual plots. v In wishing the children all good things for the festive season an<T an enjoyable holiday, Mr Melrose stressed the importance of agriculture to New Zealand and the important part the farmers’ children can play in the life of New Zealand. The results of the competitions were as follows:

Best Pet Lamb: Melville Weal 1, • Max Lawson 2, Doreen Wickliffe 3. Butcher’s lamb: Doreen Wickliffe 1, Neville Weal 2, Barbara Lawson 3. School Vegetable Garden (maximum 40 points): Neil Anderson (35. points) 1, Jack Barron (34 points) 2, Alf Watchorn (31 points) 3, Percy Clarke (29 points) 4. The headmaster thanked the judges for the interest taken in the work of the school and predicted a much better attendance of parents when the objects of the clubs were better Understood.
