PEACE RECORDS

HOW THE NATIONS FARED. Which European country can claim the longest record of peace? Investigation shows that Holland is out of it, for she had a war in Europe in 1830 against the revolting Belgians and their French allies, and has had several “little wars” since in her overseas possessions. Norway was involved in the Napoleonic wars as an appendage first of Denmark and afterwards of Sweden. Switzerland, however, remained passive in Napoleon’s time, and the last time the Swiss took up arms in earnest was in the resistance of some isolated communities of the French Republican armies of 1798. Switzerland, therefore, seems to hold the palm for peace, though probably Norway has suffered the least from war of !(ny European nation. Yet as late as 1857 Switzerland was "in a state ot war” against Prussia over Neuchatel, which was claimed by both parties. But as neither could get at the other without violating neutral ground the matter was settled without bloodshed.
