The bronze beetle is now showing up in Hawke’s Bay orchards. This pest is a shining bronze colour, and about a quarter of an inch long. It was described by Mr G. H. Mclndoe, Government orchard instructor in Hawke’s Bay, as one of those unsatisfactory pests for which no measures calculated to give even reasonable control have been devised. The beetle itself is extremely hardy, and doses of arsenate of lead sufficient to kill almost any other insect leave it apparently not the least inconvenienced. Satisfaction with the progress made with State Housing in the Waikato was expressed yesterday by the Minister of Housing and Minister in charge of the State- Advances Corporation, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, who is visiting Hamilton. Although numbers of houses had already been built, said Mr Armstrong, there was still a keen demand for houses in Waikato towns. In Auckland 2000 rental houses had been provided and a record number of loans had beert granted for private building, but the inquiry for houses in the city seemed as keen as ever.
