RED CROSS SOCIETY

TE AWAMUTU SUB-CENTRE. The second general meeting of the Red Cross Society was held yesterday afternoon in the Town Hall. The president, Mrs C. G. Downes, presided. Apologies were received from Ivlesdames Armstrong, Brooks, Connal, A. Kay, Locke, S. C. Macky, J. Parr and Miss Bockett for their unavoidable absence.

The weekly home nursing classes, are proving very popular, 41 members now attending. An urgent appeal was made to all members and friends to assist the society in its knitting campaign. A request was made that all finished articles be left with Mrs Muir as soon as possible, and that further supplies of wool be obtained from her. It was decided* that as soon as patterns and materials were received from headquarters the making of houssifs would be commenced. The society is making arrangements to supply a package containing an assortment of useful articles to each soldier from this district who has enlisted with the first echelon. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Ryburn for the gift of a calf, which was sold, the proceeds going to the society’s funds. The monthly street stall will be held on Thursday next, under the management of members of the Women’s Institute. A strong appeal was made to members and friends for donations of all classes of produces and goods for the stall. In response to a request from Hopu Hopu Gamp for literature, a quantity has been collected and left at Mr J. G. Wynyard’s office. It would greatly assist the society if anyone intending to visit the camp would kindly collect and deliver same, so that the men may have it at the earliest opportunity. The resignation of Mrs Connal, who is shortly to leave the district, was accepted with regret.

In closing the meeting the president stressed the necessity for more members, and asked all present to assist with the great work.
