SLEEPING GAR DEVELOPMENT. In August 1859, just over eighty* years ago, the first railway sleeping car appeared on the Chicago and Alton Railroad of the United States. Some years the Pullman Palace Car Co. was formed and thus began the era of sleeping car travel. The first European sleeping, car train was introduced in May 1873 between Paris and Vienna, via Strasbourg, and m September of the same year, on what is now the East Coast main line of the L.N.E.R. there appeared the first British sleeping car. These, pioneer , British sleeping cars ran between King’s Cross and. Glasgow and were built by a Manchester 1 firm. Three beds were provided in each compartment, these being brought into use by pulling down the backs of the seats. To-day the L.N.E.R. run 129 sleeping cars and their equipment includes air conditioning, electrically-heated corridors, and shower baths.
