WAIPA RACING CLUB

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. ARRANGEMENTS FOR RACES. A meeting of the committee of the Waipa Racing Club was held last Friday evening, the particular business being to consider and further arrangements for the summer race meeting to be held on Saturday of next week, December 16th. There were present Messrs J. T. Young (president), M. McNair, A. H. Storey, A. Bona, T. G. Martin, S. A. Empson, M. H. Tims, H. O. Kay, A. R. Kay and the secretary, Mr J. G. Wynyard. The secretary reported that the following nominations, and comparisons with the summer meetings of 1938 (held at Te Rapa) and 1937:

199 249 172 The possibility of the Waipa Plate; 61 furlongs, having to be run in divisions was considered, and it was decided that as the totalisator could not be opened twice the stake will be increased by only £4O. The orig'nal stake was £llO, and the Rule's of Racing provide that if run in divisions the winner of each must receive not less than half that stake. Under division the two winners will each receive £6O, and each second horse £l5. The president reported the small improvements effected at the course, by authority of the special committee, and their action was approved. Arrangements had also been made for improvement to the totalisator building and the number board and judge’s box. The offer of Mr W. S. Goosman, M.P., for a trophy for one of the events at the next winter meeting was accepted with thanks. Regret was expressed at the departure shortly of Mr R. H. G. Connal, manager of the local Union Bank of Australia, and an honorary steward of the Racing Club. The meeting placed on record appreciation of his services to the Club and to the community, and congratulated him upon his promotion to the managership of the Palmerston North branch. Mr Tims reported that, in compliance with the requirements of the stipendiary steward, he had negotiated with Mr W. H. Parish to secure an exchange of a small piece of land that would permit of a much improved starting point for the mile and a quarter events. Agreement had been reached, Mr Parish being very considerate to the club.—Approved. The Course Committee reported having authorised asphalting along the front of the grandstand, and at several other points, besides concreting the floors in some of the buildings. The total cost was approximately £llO. The secretary reported that the stakes for the coming meeting would total £l7OO, and this was approved by the Racing Conference before nominations were invited. Messrs T. G. Martin, A. Bond, E. Bedford and A. R. Kay were appointed horse holders for the race meeting. Several other keen members were allocated responsibility for various jobs. The donation of two young pigs for the members* refreshment room by an enthusiastic member was announced, and accepted. The resignation of two members, who had left the district, was accepted with regret, and the following new members were elected: Messrs M. Ryan, Kihiklhl, and Geo. Ross, Puniu Road. Mr Storey reported that arrangements had been made with the Transport Department officials for a satisfactory allocation of sites for motor traffic. Traffic from Te Awamutu would go in the gate at the end of Tawhiao Street (or Racecourse Road) and cross to the inside of the course, to be parked in rows, until just before horses for the first race are paraded. Thereafter they will have to be accommodated in the old car paddock. It was arranged to hold a working bee of all available members at the course on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, as many minor details will need attention to have everything in readiness for race day. Discussion arose over the suggested remodelling of the publican’s booth, but it was a job too late to be tackled and completed before race day. Temporary improvement will be effected, and the major task dealt with after the meeting.
