ITEMS OF INTEREST. AS REPORTED IN THE WAI PA POST, Ist DEQEMJBER, 1914Messrs A. S. Wallace (chairman), M. C. Lawson, and G. Spinley were members present at the fortnightly meeting of Te Awamutu Town Board, Messrs S. C. Mathews and Wl Taylor being absent through ill-health. Quotations for supply of galvanised piping in connection with the water supply were 4id a foot for three sizes—li, 15, and 1-inch. Messrs Lawson and Spinley were deputed to take any steps deemed expedient in the direction of forming a Fire Board. Messrs Wallace and Spinley were oppointed to confer with the Wjaipa County Council re the proposed direct road to Paterangi, one route suggested being via Tawhiao Street and another on the far side of the railway line. Six rubbish bins are to be placed in the main street, and the public urged to endeavour to keep the streets tidy. Te AWamutu tennis players defeated a visiting team from Te Kuiti, sets being even, but the home team having an advantage of five games in the aggregate. Playing for the Bartleet Badges at the local bowling green, R. L. Henderson and D. M. Christian defeated F. H. Vile and W. Douglas, 18—*13. Rainfall for November measured by Mr W. Jeffery was 1.15 inches.

Stock for the Belgian Relief Fund sold on Saturday realised £ll 7s 6d. One seller was a boy five and a half years old. Another small boy wrote: “ Mr Auctioneer, —Dear Sir, —I would like you to sell my little piggie to get some money to help to buy some clothes for the poor little Belgian boys and girls. Its name is Princess Kaiser.” (The writer is now a farmer along Pirongia-Kawhia Road).

Mr H- Munro Wilson has submitted a plan and report on proposed improvement to Albert Park, and the Domain Board has referred the report to the Chamber of Commerce. Gift auctions locally for the Belgian Relief Fund provided £196 14s 6d. Our Pirongia correspondent reports that local horses are in training for the race meeting on Boxing Day; Mr Tom Steel has been busy getting the course and appointments in order; and expectations are that the meeting will be a great success. Messrs J. A. Young, M.P., and A. A. Scholes are conducting a very intensive campaign for the general election. At Mr Scholes’ Te Awamutu meeting ,Mr A. S. Wallace (Town Board chairman) was unavoidably absent, and Mr J. B. Teasdale was voted to the chair.

A correspondent, writing re the proposed improvement to Albert Park, suggests that the sports advocates should show their bona fides by each giving one day’s work to carry out the improvement scheme. He also advocated raising a loan for the work, pointing out that the loan would only represent a rate of one-sixteenth of a penny in the pound on the rateable value of the town district. Police Commissioner Cullen, of Auckland, and Inspector Wright, of Hamilton, visited Te Awamutu and Kihikihi police districts yesterday. Mr J. A. Young, M-P., has been nominated by the following for the Waikato seat: F. Potts, Pirongia; B. Smith, Hamilton; A. E. Langley, Kawhia; F. Quin, Te Awamutu; A. S. Wallace, Te Awamutu; H. Weal, Te Awamutu; F. J. Binnie, Tuhikaramea; Mary M. Chivers, Hamilton; J. S. Fisher, Pukerimu; John Martin, Putaruru; W. G. Macky, Paterangi. The license of the Commercial Hotel, Te Awamutu, has been transferred from H. A. Luks to E. J. R. Smith.

The Australian and New Zealand Expeditionary Forces have disembarked in Egypt to assist in the defence of that country, and also to complete their training there. When their training is completed they will proceed to thQ front to fight alongside the other British troops. The Kihikihi Town Board (Mr J. G. Elmsley, chairman) has been warned from Hamilton not to interfere with the Puniu bridge, where damage to the decking had occurred and which the Board proposed to repair. The baby show at the Catholic Church bazaar resulted: Six months and under, Gordon R. Smith and Bernard Cox tied for first; girls, 12 months and under, Maureen Kay; boys 12 months and under, Jack Dalton 1.
