Good progress is being made with the construction of the new’ Narrows Bridge over the Waikato River on the Tamahere-Rukuhia Road. Reporting to the Waikato County Council yesterday, Mr A. A. Woodward, the county engineer, said the arches, the cross-beams and the longitudinal beams on one half of the bridge had been concreted. The timbering of the beams on the other half was nearly finished and concreting should commence on that section of the w’ork in about ten days. * “It is really surprising, in these days when efforts are being made to secure greater safety on the roads, .that persons should seek motor driving licenses x when they so ill-pre-pared;” commented Mr G. G. Winter, overseer and traffic inspector of the Waikato County Council, in his monthly report presented to the meeting of the council yesterday. Manv tests, for driving licenses were made during the past month, he said, and again a large proportion of the applicants had to be refused on the first application. The driving was not up to standard. Because of the war the New Zealand Centennial Boy Scout jamboree will not now take place. This was announced by Commissioner J. E. F. Vogef at jamboree headquarters, Wellington. It was to have been the biggest international youth gathering ever held in this country. He recalled that shortly before the outbreak of hostilities the jamboree headquarters announced that in the event of war it would necessary to cancel the jamboree. Now' the organisers had decided not to carry on with the arrangements. The fact that the camp site at Heretaunga was no longer available and no other suitable site could be found, definitely precluded holding the jamboree. Considering that centralisation of sporting is undesirable, that the provision of sports grounds in the country centres ought to be encouraged, and that it was the wrong principle to expect ratepayers in the country •to be taxed to provide inanities for the town centres, the Waikato County Council decided yesterday to make objection on those grounds to the proposal of the Hamilton Domain Board to levy local bodies in the district fb.t the provision of better sporting facilities in Hamilton. The opinion was expressed at the meeting that the scheme would probably be delayed as the result of the outbreak of war.
