LOCAL AND GENERAL

The committee appointed a few months ago to investigate and promote plans for a district Centennial Memorial at Te Awamutu announces to-day that a public meeting will be held in the. Town Hall on Tuesday, June 20th. As this is an important occasion the date will be noted by all citizens who will desire an active participation in the final selection of a type of memorial and in the steps necessary to commemorate the centennial next year. | The inquiry conducted by the I Auckland District Committee last evening into the allegation that P. Burgess, rider of Mr Allan Kay's Suleiman in the open sprint event at Te Aroha last February, had been offered a bribe to prevent that horse winning, resulted in'.Burgess being freed of any blame. The committee decided that another jockey who was alleged to have been involved in the matter was not guilty of any evil intent, but he was admonished and advised to communicate with the racing officials immediately if any incident of the kind occurred again. Among the successful competitors in the elocution classes at the Waikato Winter Show was Master Garth Cullen, son of Mr and Mrs J. R. Cullen, of Te Awamutu, who won in the class for 14 years and under. His teacher was Miss Walsh, of Ngaruawahia. It is interesting to note that Garth Cullen also won a silver cup in a similar class of competition at Leamington a few months ago. Another success for Te Awamutu district was that of Mr Cyril J. Flay, of Te Rahu, who won the men’s open class. Mr Flay is the well-known secretary of the Te Awamutu branch of the Farmers’ Union. Comment was made, following the jubilee celebrations on Saturday last, upon the few cameras in use at the assembly, as compared with Rangiaohia the previous day. At the latter function somebody remarked that “there were dozens of cameras, and all busy.’’ At Te Awamutu it was rather odd to see a camera brought into use. It may be remarked that in addition to the amateur photographers there was a professional seeking business, and he was well patronised. Among the most interesting groups snapped were members of two very old families in the district. Each mustered over a dozen heads. Applications for enrolment in the National Military Reserve received up to 9 a.m. on Tuesday totalled 5606. The Wellington .enrolments are the highest, 954 having offered their services. Auckland has the next largest number with 837. and Christchurch is third with 523. There has been an exceptionally good response in Hamilton, where there have been 500 enrolments. Details of the enrolments in the various postal districts are: Auckland 837, Blenheim 55, Christchurch 523. Dunedin 358, Gisborne 178, Greymouth 29, Hamilton 500, Invercargill 384. Napier 417, Nelson 200, New Plymouth 241, Oamaru 74, Palmerston North 249, Thames 189, Tnnaru 113, Wanganui 263. Wellington 954, Westport 42. So far as the A.R.C. Great Northern meeting has progressed (to-day is the final day), Te Awamutu has figured fairly prominently. On Saturday Mrs A. Loomb’s gelding, Loombination won the Penrose Hurdles m good style, and her other horse, Eri nation, ran third in the Great Northern Hurdles, Charade and Inness Lad beating him in the run to the post Furthermore, the local noiseman R. E. Horne piloted the winners of the two principal flat events, riding Royal Appellant in the Cornwall Handicap, and Mr J. Sklenars Gay Seton in the Members’ Handicap. Incidentally a very large dividend resulted in each of these events. On Monday Erination again filled third berth, this time in the Remuera Hurdles, with Charade and Biform in front of him. Mr R. J. Sexton’s (Kaipaki) Smilin’ Thru’ finished third to Survoy and Power Chief in the Great Northern Steeples. In the Panmure Hurdles Loombination finished second (to Ellanui), and Mr L. R. Kay’s Little Briton was third. At Wanganui on Saturday, Mr E. Murtagh’s Corato won the open sprint, and on Monday he was third in a similar class of event.
