PICNIC RACING

SUCCESSFUL INAUGURAL MEETING. LARGE CROWD ATTENDS. The inaugural meeting of the Otorohanga Picnic Racing Club was held on Saturday in brilliant sunshine, and in the presence of a very large crowd of spectators. The events were run to schedule and everything passed without a hitch throughout, despite the large fields competing. A loud-speaker kept the public informed of all that was going on, and announced the winners and placings. Among those present were the Hon. W. E. Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs, and Mr W. J. Broadfoot, M.P. for Waitomo, and numbers of sportsmen from Auckland, Hamilton, Te Awamutu and Cambridge. The Minister and Mr Broadfoot both addressed the gathering and expressed their pleasure at being present at such a well-ordered race meeting.

The following are the results:— Hangatiki Handicap (first division) : The Orator 1, Gay Lad 2, Laddie 3. Won by three lengths. Pony Race (girl riders): Beryl Maxwell 1, June Chaffey 2, Velda Maxwell 3.

Hangatiki Handicap (second division): Little Don 1, Digger 2, Tarzan 3. Won by 2% lengths. Kio Kio Hurdle Race: Mr Harold Ormsby’s Peter 1, Mr R. W. Hastie’s Anlution 2, Miss M. Walker’s Lady Diana 3. Won by 4 lengths. Pony Race (boys): Maxwell’s pony 1.

Drover’s Race (for horses owned and ridden by bona fide King Country drovers): Mr Denis E. Egan’s De Valera 1, Mr C. C. Merrin’s Munga Peter 2, Mr F. N. Gooding’s Brumby 3. Won easily by six lengths. This was a very large field, and the win a most popular one. Pony Race, handicap: Beryl Maxwell 1.

King Country Cup, 1 mile: Mr Ken Jones’ The Orator 1, Mr F. T. Wyllie’s Laddie 2, Mr Ben Board’s Gay Lad 3. Won by a length and a-half, with third horse a neck away.

Maniapoto Stakes (for horses owned and ridden by Maoris): Mr Peter Morgan’s Tarzan 1, Mr Harold Ormsby’s Whoopee 2, Mr H. Stafford’s Rex 3. Won easily. Otewa Handicap (first division): Mr B. Board’s Gay Lad 1, Mr S. Westmacott’s Rufus 2, Mr O. L. Thomas’ Rex 3. Half a length, third horse a neck away. Pony Race (lady riders): Mrs C. C. Merrin 1.

Otewa Handicap (second division): Mr C. Turner’s Digger 1, Messrs T. Carter and R. Muir’s Little Don 2, Mr F. T. Wyllie’s Laddie 3. Two lengths, third horse a head away. Consolation Handicap: Mr Henry Rothery’s Anthony 1. Won by six lengths. This was a popular win for the president of the Club. The trophies won by the various owners were presented by the president on the ground.
