POPE’S FIRST SPEECH
ENCOURAGING HARMONY. “To our fatherly message we wish to add an exhortation to peace. This peace, sublime gift from Heaven, is the desire of all good souls and the fruit of charity and justice. We exhort all the world to the peace of conscience, quiet in the friendship of God, to family peace, united and harmonious in the holy love of Christ; -finally, to peace between all nations through brotherly and reciprocal help through friendly collaboration and cordial understanding for the higher estate of the great human family under the regard and protection of Divine Providence. And during these agitated and difficult tasks, while so many difficulties appear to be opposed to the realisation of this peace, which is the deepest aspiration of the arts, we raise to the Lord a special prayer for all those on whom weighs the very high honour and the very grave responsibility of leading the nations into the way of prosperity and progress.”—The new Pope, in his first speech after election.
