“ Mr Walter Nash is just about the present Government’s best man, but he is not the marvel that some people once believed him to be,” said Mr J. Hargest (National, Awarua) at the Town Hall last evening. “ Having spent, and encouraged everybody else to spend and keep on spending, he now. appeals to you to save a bit so that he can collect more taxes. He is looking ahead to next general election. He and his party do not talk now about costless credit, new railways, and many of the other catchcries of earlier days. We Nationalists do not stand for a reduction of the social services and the smashing of wage rates. That is not our policy, and the responsibility is on the Labour Government to get out of the mess it has got into. The present Government has gone ‘ broke.’ Mr Nash alleged a short time ago that the. Nationalists wanted to raise interest rates, but he would not permit it. However, only a few days ago he and his party increased the interest rate to a figure above that of Mr Coates several years ago. Mr Coates and not Mr Nash brought interest rates down.”
