MISTAKEN NOTE

REMARKABLE SERIES OF ERRORS. “AN HONEST MAN." Mistaken for a 10s note, a .£5O note passed through the hands of several people in Hamilton until reaching an honest tradesman who, on cashing up one evening, realised that the note had been cashed by someone mistaking it for a 10s note and handed it to the Hamilton police, who were able to establish the owner. A Hamilton woman cashed a cheque at a local bank and received the £5O. She handed it on as 10s in giving change of a £5 to a son who was to be married. The son gave the note to the Minister who married him and later the minister handed the money to the gardener, receiving 5s change on the understanding that he was paying the gardener 5s for his services. Still the note had not been noticed to be of high denomination by any of the recipients. The gardener purchased his provisions from the tradesman and gave the £5O note over the counter as a 10s note. When the police were informed of the mistake they communicated with the bank which was able to state that the £5O note of that number had been cashed for a cheque and paid to the woman who first gave it in mistake for 10s. It is understood that when the woman discovered her mistake she hurried to Auckland in pursuit of the honeymooning couple to see what had become of the note.
