Mr R. W. Smith, M.P. for Waimarino, is visiting Te Awamutu and the Kawhia district.

The opening meeting of the Te Awamutu Girls’ Club’s new term was attended by about thirty members; and the following officers were elected: President, Miss Stewart; committee, Mesdames Whity, Reekie. Bryant, exhibition of club swinging; Miss Michell, pianoforte items. Arrangements were made for addresses by Mrs (Dr) Reekie and Rev. F. W. Clarke. In a well-attended hockey match at Bockutt’s Paddock, Rovers defeated Paterangi by 2 goals to 1. At Pirongia the home team was defeated by Waratahs by 5 goals to 2. For the Empson Cup Waratahs now lead with five points; Rovers have three, and Paterangi and Pirongia ono each. Three more matches are to be played. Mr and Mrs D. O’Shea are to be tendered a farewell social at Pirongia. There was a fair attendance of the public at Victoria Park on Sunday afternoon, when the Town Band rendered an appropriate programme of music. Rev. Dr Cleary, D.D., is to arrive in Te Awamutu on Saturday afternoon, and will officially open the new Catholic Presbvtery at Kihikihi on Sunday at 11 a.m. It is understood he will be the recipient of an -address and a purse of sovereigns from the Catholics of the parish. Waipa Rugby Union decided to invite Mr S. C. Macky, of Paterangi, to referee in the Kihikihi v. Te Awamutu match next Saturday. Mr F. D. Wood refereed the Rugby match last Saturday, Te Awamutu A (captained by Teddy) v. Te Awamutu B (captained by Clarke). The former team won bv 15 points to 3. Mr W. Goodfellow, managing director of the Waikato Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., met the settlers of Ranginui, Maihiihi and Rangiatea last Tuesday to discuss matters of mutual interest, and it was arranged to send home-separated cream to the company.

Settlers at Tautari farewelled Mr and Mrs Mathers. Kawa settlers met to consider the Government’s offer of £2 for £1 on all money contributed by settlers to metal the road between Kawa railway station and the prison reformatory. The chairman, Mr J. B. Teasdale, explained that in addition to the subsidy the Government was giving £350. It was decided to at once collect all promised donations and canvass the district for further support. It was stated the metalling of the road would put thousands of pounds on to the value of the land, and give access to the railway at all times. Kihikihi Hack Racing Club has decided to inform Waipa Club that it cannot agree to alter the date of its race meeting from Januar” 1. The club’s new committee is Messrs A. McCardle, R. Henderson, J. Anderson, A. Mold. A. Anderson, E. Aiderson and C. Thomson. Mr W. G. Kay was elected president, Mr C. O’Brien secretary. Mr J. G. Elmsly treasurer, and Mr H. Weal handicapper, Messrs A. Cullen and H. McCathie and W. G. Kay as protest committee. Drainage operations are still proceeding in the Kawa Swamp, and soon over a thousand acres of waste land will be producing butterfat. Some oi the improved land at present is carrying a beast to the acre.

At last meeting of the Waikato Hospital Board lots were drawn to decide who should resign, and Mr J. B. Teasdale was the unlucky member. Mr Teasdale has held office for 25 years.

Rangiaohia School Committee got quite a shock (our correspondent says this puts it mildly) when advice was received from the Board of Education asking the committee to seriously consider removing the school to a more central -site, with a view to accommodating children from Te Rahu and Puahue schools, as an economy measure. The committee unanimously decided to resist the- proposal. Puahue and Te Rahu schools are eleven miles apart.
