The first meeting of the National Council appointed, under the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act will be held at Parliament House on May 24. The Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. W. E. Parry, said that one of the first undertakings would be a thorough survey of the existing facilities for sport and recreation, and future requirements. The Minister said he felt that with the spirit and keenness permeating thc< council’s personnel there would not be a delay in reaching that stage of their duties. When Constable Devine, stationed at St. Albans, Christchurch, stopped an elderly man who was cycling along the footpath the other day, the cyclist explained that he was a visitor from the country and had gone on to the footpath because he was afraid of the traffic. “And I cannot blame him really,” remarked Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., when Constable Devine repeated the conversation in the witness-box. The magistrate ordered the cyclist to pay costs only.
