A PROGRESSIVE COMPANY

IN STEP WITH THE TOWN AND DISTRICT PROGRESS. The twenty-seventh annual meeting of Couriers (N.Z.) Ltd., was held in the registered office of the Company last night, the chairman of directors (Mr F. Quin), presiding. In the course of his report to shareholders, Mr Quin referred to the rising tendency in all costs items, but he was pleased to add these increases had been fully off-set by the increased volume of sales. He added that the directors had not increased the basis charges and except in one classification of the rating tariff where a small increase had been made, the advertising and subscription rates had not been varied. The effect, he pointed out, was maintained service by the newspaper at a basis charge which had not increased, but tiie result was a much bigger volume which had enabled the company to meet the effects of the rising tendency in costs. “It can be regarded,” Mr Quin said, “that the increased patronage is evidence of public appreciation.” “It should be remembered,” he added, “that at its establishment the main purpose of the Company was the publication of a newspaper in this disrict, provided therewith the maximum of service for the district consistent with the company’s economic resources. It can be claimed,” he concluded, “that this purpose is never overlooked.” The three retiring directors, Messrs F. Quin, S. A. Empson and K. C. Rickit were re-elected unopposed. Mr G. O. Jourdain was re-appointed auditor. The directors subsequently considered the growing needs and decided to install another linotype machine, and to also acquire an automatic press in the job printing department so as to keep the establishment fully equipped in keeping with the needs of a progressive town and district.
