A rather unusual reference was made in the Anzac Day address of Mr J. C. Findlater, of Hawera, who was the principal speaker at the annual commemoration services in Wanganui. He referred to the sacrifices war demanded of dumb animals. He said that in the gatherings he had addressed that day, both in Wanganui and Waverley, he had seen representatives of that very fine regiment, the Queen Alexandra’s Mounted Rifles, and there was not a man in that regiment who did not remember the part played by the horses. Mr Findlater also spoke of carrier pigeons, and said that birds often fell to their doom in clouds of gas.
