RURAL MAIL SERVICES

NEED FOR RE-ARRANGEMENT. FARMERS’ UNION INTERESTED. The subject of mail services to all the out-districts was mentioned at the monthly meeting of the Te Awamutu branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union yesterday afternoon, and members were reminded that the Post and Telegraph Department would shortly call for tenders for mail services for the three years from Ist January, 1939. Mr D. H. Cavers urged that executive members investigate matters in their own districts, and report to a special committee for negotiation with the postal authorities- The Chamber of Commerce was willing to co-operate. Several members stated that there was room for improvement in their districts, and the idea of investigation and report to a small committee was commended. They quoted some of the apparent anomalies. The following special committee was set up to receive representations for improvement of the present rural mail delivery: Messrs W. G. Neill, N. R. Fletcher, D. H. Cavers, G. R. Lawry, Hopping, and A. S. Wyllie. It was remarked that in some districts it would not be necessary to alter the routes at all, whereas in others it might be desirable to investigate with a view to re-arranging the route and the frequency of services.
