VETERINARIAN WANTED

TE AWAMUTU DISTRICT’S NEED. MR G. B. MELROSE’S SERVICES APPRECIATED. At the monthly meeting of Te Awamutu branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union yesterday afternoon Mr G. T. Crawley brought forward the matter of having a qualified veterinarian resident in the district, and suggested that the dairy companies should be urged to investigate the possibility of inducing the Department of Agriculture to make a veterinarian available to farmers in Te Awamutu district. Mr F. Onion urged that the district inspector of stock, who had the full confidence of most farmers, should be given assistance—perhaps the appointment of an official to do the clerical work would be a step in the light direction. Mr Melrose had a very extensive district to cover, and that district was developing at such a rate that Mr Melrose should have assistance, or his district should be reduced in size. After some discussion the subject of a veterinarian appointed by one or more dairy companies was not pursued, and it was decided to ask the Government to afford (more veterinary supervision and assistance in Te Awamutu district, but stressing the fact that all farmers in the district appreciated what had for years been done by Mr Melrose, in whom they had every confidence. It was realised that he was not a qualified veterinarian. His experience and advice were valuable and always available.
