BOBBY CALF TRADE

SUGGESTED POOL FOR THIS DISTRICT. WHAT OF THE NATIONAL POOL ? Proposed pools lor the bobby calf trade were referred to at yesterday's meeting of le Awamutu Branch or the New Zealand Farmers' Union, and it was remarked that farmers were so divided on the subject that it was very unlikely that a national pool would be instituted- Voters in the Auckland province had given overwhelming support for the pooling system, ana the opinion was expressed that district pools could be promoted. This brought advocacy of convening the local Rationalisation Committee to take practical steps in this direction. One member asserted that one essential to support and success was to have a closed transport area, so that price-cutting could not be introduced. Mr N. B. Fletcher said his impression was that the Minister of Marketing had declared that if the farmers did not organise the industry along rational lines the Government would do so. Mr D. H. Cavers said that was hardly a correct resume of the Minister’s statement; but Mr Nash did make it clear that he would not introduce a compulsory bobby calf pool without the very substantial support of the dairy industry—the farmers themselves. The recent voting had shown a wide divergence of opinion, with about equal numbers of dairymen for and against.

It was decided to ask the existing committee to consider the situation.
