TE AWAMUTU LIBRARY

ANNUAL MEETING. There was only a small attendance, due no doubt to the boisterous weather conditions, at the annual meeting of subscribers to the Te Awamutu Public Library, held on Thursday evening. His Worship the> Mayor( Mr George Spinley) presided. The report of the librarian (Mrs H. Bell) stated that during the year the Library had made some progress, and at the close there were 283 subscribers. In the previous year 328 new books were placed in the Library, and 41 second-hand books, two of which were replacements. This year 435 new books had been added, 331 of which were novels and 104 non-fiction. The average number of books issued monthly was approximately 29«30. Continuing, Mrs Bell stated that with the/ assistance of Mrs Neilson, she was at present engaged in “stock taking” of the books. Old non-fiction books (comprising mainly religious works, biographies and travel) which were never asked for, had been stacked in and on a cupboard so that there would be more room on the shelves. These number 348. On the top shelf there were 73 miscelaneous books which rarely went out; on tho lower shelf were 200 biographies, 15 New Zealand histories; 72 general histories; 31 flying; 38 social economic; 30 essays; 11 Artic and Everest expeditions; 160 travel, and 3591 novels. A large number of the novels were in a very tattered condition and should be discarded. The new system of reinforcing the books before they were put into circulation should make last in good condition a great oeal longer than they have done hitherto. The report, regarded as satisfactory, was adopted. Mrs H. Empson, Mr H. T. Haselden and the Rev. Martin Sullivan were appointed to the committee for the j ensuing year, the latter taking the place of J. P. Brown, who has I left the district. Three representaI tives from the Te Awamutu Borough I Council have still to be appointed.
