INTER-SCHOOL SPORTS

RUGBY AND BASKETBALL. The annual inter-school Rugby football and basketball competitions were played yesterday afternoon at Te Awamutu, the competing teams being representative of Te Awamutu, Te Kuiti, Otorohanga, and Camridge. The Teddy Shield was not at stake, but the secondary department of each of the four schools named played friendly contests at Rugby football. The first match was between Cambridge and Otorohanga, at Albert Park, and the Otorohanga boys soon asserted their superiority, to put on 28 points to nil when the final whistle sounded. The southerners were bigger, probably older, and certainly had a better knowledge of the game than the Cambridge fifteen, and had a comfortable victory. Te Kuiti and Te Awamutu teams met during the afternoon, and an interesting contest eventuated, but the King Country lads proved too many for their opponents, eventually winning by 26 points to 3. The forwards were fairly well matched, but in the rearguard the visitors threw the ball about at every opportunity, and practically all the scores came from these movements. Time after time Don Paul, the Te Awamutu centre, cut through, but was unsupported, and the attack was beaten off. BASKETBALL CONTEST. The baskeball competitions were for the Collison Cup, and all the contests were keenly fought. Te Awamutu were matched with Otorohanga in the eliminating round, and won by 15 goals to 7, and Cambridge put up the great score of 23 goals to the 3 scored by Te Kuiti. In the final, against Te Awamutu, Cambridge outplayed the opposition, scoring a total of 30 goals to 7, to win the cup. Cambridge were clearly superior in both games, and played basketball as it should be played. At the conclusion of the games Mr A. H. Woods, headmaster of Te Awamutu District High School, presented the trophy and congratulated the winning team, the cup being handed over amid cheers. Then afternoon tea was served by the local girls, and the visitors departed for home after a thoroughly enjoyable outing. CATHOLIC SCHOOLS’ TOURNEY. SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE. The annual seven-a-side Rugby football tournament of the Roman Catholic schools of Waikato was held at Hamilton on Monday. Fast, open play, with many close games, was witnessed. The fixture was conducted by the Hamilton Marist Brothers. Teams from the convent schools of Te Awamutu, Te Kuiti, Morrinsville, Matamata, Te Aroha, Paeroa, Ngaruawahia, Thames, Huntly, Frankton, and Hamilton Marist participated. An excellent display was given by the finalists, Thames and Matamata, the teams being still level when extra time had been played. It was resolved to declare these two teams joint winners of the Reid Cup for 1937. On behalf of the visiting teams the Rev. Father O’Connor, of Frankton, returned thanks to all who had helped to make the tournament such a success.
