NO SMOKING

INSTRUCTIONS TO SCHOOL TEACHERS. Instructions that they are not to smoke either inside the school building or in the school grounds have been issued to teachers under the jurisdietino of the Auckland Education Board. It is stated that the recent destruction of several schools by fire has been responsible for the board deciding to prohibit its teachers from smoking until they are well clear of the school grounds. Although some headmasters have for many years followed the practice of requesting their teachers to refrain from smoking in the presence of children, other headmasters have raised no objection to teachers smoking either in the staff rooms during intervals or in the class rooms after school when marking papers or attending to other duties which require them to remain behind after the children have gone. In future this practice, described by several teachers as a very welcome relaxation, is to be definitely forbidden.
