EXCESSIVE SPEED
MOTOR GYCLIST FINED. An allegation by Inspector Metcalfe, of the Transport Department, that a cycle mechanic, Arthur Lowe, had driven a motor cycle along Alexandra Street, Te Awamutu, at 5.45 p.m. on June Ist, at an excessive speed, was heard in the local Court this morning. Lowe admitted the charge. Inspector Metcalfe said Lowe was driving in to Te Awamutu at 50 miles per hour. Near the post office he reduced to 45 miles, and then opened out to quite 60 miles per hour along Alexandra Street, right past four intersections, and overtaking several other vehicles. Lowe told him he had come through from Auckland. Complaints had been made to him about Lowe’s practice of driving too fast. Ho regarded Lowe as an expert driver.. The Magistrate (Mr J. S. L. Hew:tt) regarded the offence as a foolish speed at which to travel through a town. A fine of £5 was imposed, with 10s costs.
