UNVEILING CEREMONY
FUNCTION AT TE MAWHAI. A large and representative gathering of settlers, residents, and school children attended a service in Te Mawhai Hall yesterday, which by its very simplicity was most impressive. The occasion was the unveiling of a memorial plaque to the memory of the late Miss 1. A. Oates, a former pupil and teacher of the Te Mawhai school.
During the service a solo, “ No Burdens Yonder,” was sung by Miss P. Rathbon, a former pupil of the late Miss Oates.
After the service in the hall the congregation retired to the school, where the Rev. W. H. Moore, of Kihikihi, in a few well-chosen words, dedicated and unveiled the memorial plaque, to which was attached above an enlarged photograph of the late Miss Oates.
The plaque, which is of simple yet artistic design, is of polished rimu, with gold lettering, and enclosed in a glass-covered rimu frame. It bears the inscription: “ In memory of Iris A. Oates, pupil and teacher, Te Mawhai School. Died 13th March, 1936. ‘ Service, not Self.’ Erected by pupils and residents.”
