OTOROHANGA NEWS

HEAVY MOTOR TRAFFIC. (Our Resident Representative.) On Wednesday, a beautiful day of warm sunshine, a convalescent was taking the sun on a seat opposite the Soldiers’ Monument, on the main highway, at the northern end of the main street. To while away the time he took an inventory of all motor vehicles that passed around the corner between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3.30 p.rn. His book showed that he had registered 731. Of this number there were 365 passing northwards and 366 southwards —most of them cars. Apart from the fact that it was a beautiful day, and it was stock sale day —when farmers attending the sales usually bring in units of the family for shopping, etc., there was nothing unusual on in the town. SUCCESSFUL DANCE. The annual dance of the Roman Catholic community, in the Otorohanga Town Hall, on Tuesday evening was, as is usual with this function, an unqualified social and financial success. Good organisation was apparent throughout, and the hand round supper arrangements, provided by the ladies, left nothing to be desired. O’Connell’s orchestra provided the dance music, while Mr B. Sheehan functioned well as the principal M.C. Visitors were present from all parts of the King Country, and some from further afield. CASH FARM SALE. During the week a 200 odd acre farm, well improved, near Otorohanga, was sold for a figure in the vicinity of £5,000, and it was an allcash transaction, which is somewhat rare in land sales here. TERRITORIALS AT PLAY. The Otorohanga Corps of Territorials are now in active training on the Island Reserve, for the Rugby contest against the To Awamutu Territorials, which eventuates on the 22nd inst. A good team to represent Otorohanga is now assured. In the primary schools’ Rugby contest, between Otorohanga and Tauntarunui, played at Taumarunui, Otorohanga won a willing bout by 3 to nil. The Otorohanga representatives beat Maniapoto by -26 points to 13, after the winners had been penalised frequently for scrum infringements. DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB. Mr L. Palmer, the president, occupied the chair at the annual meeting of the Otorohanga Defence Rifle Club. There was a large and enthusiastic attendance of members. The trophy winners for the past year were: Johnson trophy, T. Melville, 180; Holmes' trophy, J. Onion, 181; Graham trophy, H. Graham 186; Westmacott trophy, J. Onion, 264; Palmer-Hyde trophy, L. Palmer, 282; club championship, L. Palmer, 607; handicap aggregate, T. Melville, 584; service championship, J. Onion, 272; Doull's trophy, for most improved shot, T. Melville. The president, in his report, stated that the past was (he most successful season in the history of the club. The shooting improved to such an extent that the elub standard had to be raised from 90 to 94, in spite of

the fact that the handicaps were considefably reduced. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Patron, Major H. S. S. Westmacott, 0.8. E.; president, Mr L. Palmer (re-elected); vice-president, Messrs W. Sanders, W. H. Holmes, Dickens and J. H. Graham; deputy chairman, Mr G. Hyde; secretary and treasurer, Mr Melville: auditor, Mr Haycock; range officer, Mr L, Palmer; trench officers, Messrs Southall and Hyde; handicappers, Messrs F. Hyde and L. Palmer; coaches, Messrs Annan and Palmer; ammunition custodian, Mr B. Palmer; executive committee, Messrs Melville, Hyde, L. Palmer, Hooper, Onion. McCready, Southall and Haycock.
