MILK POWDER

SALES INCREASING IN ENGLAND. DEVELOPING DEMAND IN OTHER COUNTRIES. Detailing the steps which had to be taken before the milk powder industry was definitely established in England, Mr W. Goodfellow, addressing the gathering of farmers at Waitoa last Thursday evening, stated that at one time the manufacturing company’s travellers had succeeded in placing the product with most of the bakers for use in the making of bread. The demand, however, had not been maintained and upon investigation it was found that in practically every case the powder containers had been unopened, tho bakers themselves being conservatively inclined and somewhat loath to experiment. The only thing to do was to send expert bakers round to open the milk powder and demonstrate to the bakers that by using milk powder they could make more bread than by the original method. This had cost money but it had established the market and there were few now who did not use it. It was the same with the manufacturers of biscuits and ice cream, but in the latter instance he was pleased tc be able to say that all ice cream manufacturers used the powders now and sales last year totalled 6800 tons exceeding the year's manufacture. EXPANDING MARKET. In the above connection it was gratifying to know that at the present time Mr J. B. Wright (the London agent) is asking for 500 tons in excess of last year’s manufacture to meet the growing market. Milk powder has now gained a wide popularity in the East, where there is practically endless scope for expansion. Besides the English and Continental markets, the product has now an established market at Singapore and Malay, Shanghai, Hongkong, Yokohama, Darien, Bombay, Colombo, Calcutta. Cristobel, Kingston, Batavia, Balboa, Manilla, Pacific Islands and Honolulu. It is also in keen demand at Sydney, Australia.
