BOBBY CALF KILLINGS

SEASON REACHES ITS PEAK. OVER 15,000 A WEEK HANDLED. With the new dairy season now well under way the bobby calf trade is reaching its peak. At the Horotiu works killings of between 15,000 and 16,000 a week are being made, and it is expected that the largest single weekly tally will be reached next week when the works will handle at least 16,000 head. The greatest numbers of calves are being received from Morrinsville and neighbourhood, with Te Awamutu district a good second. Then come the Matamata and Te Aroha districts. Calves have come forward slightly earlier this year probably owing to the fact that grass growth has been well maintained throughout the winter and temperatures have, on the whole, been mild. There appears to be no appreciable difference between the aggregate killings of bobby calves at Horotiu to date as compared with last year, but this can probably be accounted for by the number of farmers who have gone over to sheep owing to the farmlabour shortage or in view of the present buoyant demand in the wool and fat lamb trades.
