TRANSPORT LICENSES

CREAM-CARRYING CONTRACTS. “Cream contracts are the bane of our existence,” said Mr E. J. Phelan, Transport Licensing Authority, at the hearing of several applications made at Thames on Tuesday. “They expect, upon obtaining a cream-carrying contract, to get a general goods license in a district which is otherwise well served.” Several applications were refused, while others were deferred. Much evidence was called for several Mercury Bay applications. Cream-carrying contracts had been reduced to two by the Mercury Bay Co-operative Dairy Company, Limited, doing away with the former overlapping. The successful applicants asked for licenses te carry out their contracts. The authority declined the applications, saying that he could not deprive pioneer carriers of their work, considering that there was no need for further licenses.
