N.S.W. UNEMPLOYED

40,000 JOBS WITHIN A YEAR. PREMIER’S ESTIMATE. The Premier of New South Wales (Mr. Stevens) estimated that between 30,000 and 40,000 jobs would be available for those still unemployed in the State, in the next 12 months, so that, by the end of the financial year 1937-38, there should be between 830,000 and 840,000 persons in normal work in New South Wales, instead of 800,000 as at present. Mr. Stevens made these statements in the course of an address on “Training and Employment of Youth,” broadcast through station 2 BL. From 1930 to the end of March last, said the Premier, 18,776 youths had actually been placed in work, 8679 by the young citizens’ associations, 3290 by juvenile employment exchanges, and 6807 in rural employment. Progress figures indicated that 10,000 would be placed this year, inclusive of toys under the age of 18 years. “We have been closely examining tl:e position and estimating future trends,” said Mr. Stevens. “That has led us to the conclusion that the time is ripe to begin now a more vigo-ous drive to find work for the youths and voung men remaining unemp'oyed. We believe that there will 'be enough jobs within the next 12 months to provide room, not only for them, but also for the younger boys leaving school. “We appeal for the sympathetic cooperation of employers and industrial organisations in helping to give a start to young men who have not yet had a real start in employment. Now that we are entering again into prosperity, let us share it with the man who is outside the factory gate asking for a job. Let us make the way easier for him. “The Government itself assumes the responsibility of doing all that can be done by a Government. As an employer we will set an example in our own employment arrangements. As a body entrusted with the administration, we will provide every possible administrative facility to overcome the impediments that keep young men out of a job. “It is not proposed to rush in with inflexible schemes or with new rules and regulations. It is proposed to bring in a consultative spirit to assist the Employment Board to help these young men.”
