ANOTHER BIG BRIDGE

NEW STRUCTURE AT THE NARROWS. In the course of his visit to the Waikato the Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Public Works, inspected plans for a single-arch concrete bridge to replace the present wooden structure at the-Narrows, between Rukuhia and Tamahere. The Waikato County engineer, Mr A. A. Woodward, stated the bridge would cost about £5OOO, and would be erected at a better angle than the present structure, which was erected nearly half-a-century ago, and was much the worse for wear- nowadays—so much so that the ever-in-creasing motor traffic was proving beyond its capacity. The new alignment would give fa.r better visability for motorists and other users of the road. In the resultant discussion it was stated that the controlling authority hoped to have the road from Rukuhia to Tamahere, which links the Great South Road with the Hamilton-Cafn-bridge highway, and gives a direct route to Matangi and Morrinsville, declared a statutory main highway and to secure a £2 for £1 subsidy from the Government on the cost of constructing the bridge. Failing that, a £1 for £1 subsidy would be sought.

(The Minister said the position would be investigated, and he would let the council know his decision as soon as possible.
