BRIDGE OPENED
NEW FAIRFIELD STRUCTURE. MONDAY’S FUNCTION. The Fairfield Bridge, which spans the Waikato River and eliminates Hamilton from the Rotorua-Auckland Main Highway, was opened on Monday by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple. There was a large attendance and after the ceremony hundreds of vehicles passed over the bridge in a long stream. The chairman of the Waikato County Council, Mr J. A. Sampson, presided, and among those on the platform was Mr C. H. Priestley, Mayor of Cambridge. Mr Sampson said the contract price was £22,426, andi, with the approaches, the total expenditure on the structure was £26,000. He regretted that the contractors, the Roose ShippingCompany, Limited, had lost heavily on the undertaking. They had had many unforseen difficulties to contend with, but had delivered a faithful job. Mr Semple congratulated all those who had a part in the erection of the bridge and said that the structure would serve as an inspiration to posterity to follow the example of those who were responsible for such enterprises.
The Minister then cut the ribbon with a pair of sterling gilt silver scissors- presented to him by the Waikato County Council and declared the bridge open.
