WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL
EXTRAORDINARY BYELECTION. MR GARLAND WINS NARROWLY. A good deal of interest, particularly in the Pukekura riding, and ale v throughout the county, was centred in the by-election which took place on Monday to fill the vacancy on the Waipa County Council caused by the recent death of Mr John S. Fisher, of Pukerimu, who had represented the Pukekura riding ratepayers for many years. There were two candidates Mr Alan N. Fisher, of Pukerimu, a nephew of the former councillor and son of a former chairman of the County Council, and Jonathan William Garland, of Leamington, also an old resident of the district and a former member of the Leamington Town Board. The contest resulted in the election of Mr Garland, who polled 80 votes to Mr Fisher’s 70. There were two declaration votes to come, but these could not affect the result.
