CORONATION DAY
TE AWAMUTU CELEBRATIONS. PROGRAMME ARRANGED. There was an excellent attendance at the adjourned meeting held last night, called for the purpose of making suitable arrangements for Coronation Day in Te Awamutu. The Mayor (Mr George Spinley) presided. Also in attendance were the chairman of the Waipa County Council (Mr S. C. Macky) and chairman of the Tc Awamutu Electric Power Board (Mr J. T. Johnson). After general discussion, it was finally resolved that the business peo - ple cf Te Awamutu be asked to hold a British Shopping Week; tha - . the Royal Proclamation be read at the Town Hall entrance at 10.30 a.nt. on Coronation Day and that the rest of the day be free. In the evening celebrations will be continued to take the form of street dancing and general jollifications similar to those held on previous occasions in Te Awamutu.
The.Te Awamutu Power Board will take charge of and attend to the special street lighting. Owing to the restrictions regarding the school children, it was decided that each of the school children in the whole district be presented at a date to be arranged with a suitable medal and Messrs S. C. Macky, J. T. Johnson and G. Spinley were appointed as a sub-committee to select the kind df medal with power to purchase the required number estimated at over two thousand medals. St. John Ambulance will hold a Coronation Ball in the Town Hall on the Tuesday evening prior to Coronation Day. The business people are to make special lighting displays at their shops, etc.
The entertainment committee was voted £lO to commence making arrangements for the evening’s jollifications.
Quite a number of the local organisations and clubs have promised to join in, making Coronation Day in Te Awamutu a memorable one.
