BOROUGH SALE YARDS

FARMERS AND CARRIERS DESIRE IMPROVEMENTS. CONFERENCE TO BE HELD. The borough saleyards held a prominent place in the discussion at last Monday’s meeting of the Te Awamutu Borough Council. Messrs A. T. Bryant and G. R. Lawry, acting as a sub-committee of the Te Awamutu branch of the Farmers’ Union, wrote calling attention to the exceeding difficulty experienced by farmers and drovers in getting cattle to the pens at the Te Awamutu saleyards. This was due to the unsuitable position of the entrance to the cattle pens and also to the congestion of motor lorries and cars in the stock road which runs along the north end of the sheep and pig pens. It was suggested that a road be opened along the west side of the pig and cattle pens to join the stock road with Mahoe Street, and that all vehicular traffic be strictly confined to that road except for the actual time in loading and unloading. The loading pen at the sheep pens should be shifted. The committee offered to meet the Works Committee of the Council on the ground to further discuss these difficulties and proposals. This was followed by another letter from the Waipa Carriers’ Association, who drew attention to the state of the load leading to the pig pens at the saleyards, and also pointed out that the ground at the sheep loading place is very uneven. It was suggested that a level crossing over the water table would correct this disadvantage. A washing down place for lorries coming in with stock is also required. The Association suggested that the Works Committee and foreman meet and confer with the Association at the yards. The Mayor said he hau made a preliminary inspection with the foreman, and he detailed the circumstances.

Cr Maxwell thought a washing down place necessary. The Mayor asked who would be responsible for the water used? The Council could hardly be asked to provide free facilities of this sort for carrier services which were, after all, commercialised. It was decided that the loading races be attended to, small culverts to be put in. It was further decided that the Works Committee meet the carriers and the farmers next Monday morning at 11.30 at the yards and go more fully into the several points raised. Cr North proposed that the foreman proceed with tlie metalling of the approach to the pig pens as authorised some time ago; but action was deferred pending the inspection already arranged for.
