CONVICTED OF THEFT

WOMAN SENT TO GAOL. At a special sitting of the local Court on Monday, before Messrs GA. Empson and W. Jeffery, Justices of the Peace, a woman named Elizabeth M. Miller was charged with the theft of a woollen pullover, a bottle of whisky, and a packet of matches, of a total value of £1 ss, from a local private boarding-house, where she had been seeking employment. Accused entered a plea of guilty, and said that over-indulgence in drink was the cause of her lapse. The police detailed the facts of the case, and the Bench decided to send the woman to gaol for fourteen days, remarking that, she had had several previous lapses, and a term of imprisonment would probably be in her own interests.
