BRITAIN’S TREASURES
SAFE KEEPING UNDER' WINDSOR CASTLE. Windsor Castle will become the nation s “strong box.’’ The great vaults, which extend for considerable distances beneath the Castle, will be used as air-raid shelters for valuable rrt treasures and vital records in the event of war.
During the last war several pictures. from the National Gallery, together with the royal regalia from the Tower of London, and other valuables, were stored in the lower portions of the great keep of the Castle. It is now proposed, however, to prepare properly constructed chambers for practically all the nation’s treasures in the neighbourhood of London, together with the national archives from the Rolls Office, the various Government departments, and the. galleries and museums. Hitherto the greater part of the valuts have never been used, at least, within modern times, thought a potion were coinvered into vast wine cellars during the days of the Georges. These have, however, long since been empty and neglected.
