THEN AND NOW

KEEPING THE CRADLES FULL. Mr Walter I. Bowyer, a prominent settler cf the Otorohanga District, chairman of the local District Consolidated High School, and representative on the Auckland Board of Education was present at the opening of a new school building in the Raglan hinterland recently. The new school is erected at Ruapuke—between Kawhia and Raglan, near the West Coast. The old school was erected by the earliest settlers 61 years ago. At. that time 61 children were on the fell—including 24 from two families ■ -12 in each. These two families had 31 children in all—l 6 and 15, and two sets of twins in each. To-day only 22 children attend the new school, even though the erstwhile forest clad roadless countryside has been changed to pasture lands with good metal reads almost everywhere. These facts are a striking commentary on the changing outlook which results in fewer and fewer children to replace the older generation of sturdy pioneers.
