WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. • BUSINESS DEALT WITH, The monthly meeting of the Wai pa County Council was held on Monday the sitting being a protracted one. Cr S. C. Macky (chairman) presided, and there were also present: Crs N. Reid, G. S. Clarke, G. S. Hall, F. L. Onion, T. Church, E. F. Peacock, J. T. Johnson, R. J. Graham and D. B. Livingstone. THE BLACKBERRY PEST. The clerk of the Kawa Drainage *Board wrote calling the attention of the Council to the growth of blackberries in portions of the Te Kawa swamp, the drainage of which was under the control of his Board, and the necessity for some action to prevent the further spread. It was pointed out that if immediate action were not taken to compel owners to keep the blackberries in check, it would only be a matter of time when the plant would spread and the sides of the various drains would be covered with a thick growth impeding the free flow of the water and necessitating extra expense in keeping the drains clear. It was decided to reply recommending the Board to take action under the Land Drainage Act to compel owners of the property to take the necesscary steps to clear the blackberries. PUKEATUA HALL. The secretary of the Pukeatua Hall Committee wrote stating that it had been resolved at the last meeting of the Committee to leave in abeyance the matter of severing Its connection with the Council until a later date, as it was felt that at the present juncture there was little likelihood of the Government acceding to a request to reconstitute the old Board. The writer also requested the return of the joint and several guarantee in respect of the loan for building the hall, as the debt had now been liquidated.

The chairman remarked that it was wonderful what could be done in some back places, the whole debt of £9OO on the Pukeatua Hall having been paid off in three years.

Cr Onion: The achievement is a great credit to them. On the suggestion of Cr Clarke, seconded by the chairman, it was agreed to return cancelled the joint and sev eral guarantee and to send a letter to the Hall Committee congratulating the members thereof and the people of the Pukeatua district on their splendid achievement. ROAD TO GOLF LINKS. The secretary of the Hamilton Golf Club wrote asking, in view of the New Zealand golf championships being held there in September, that the Council seal or put Vardon Road into good condition. Cr .Peacock said that 80 per cent of the users of this road were Hamilton golfers, and it was about time that they did something to help themsel ves. In any case the people coming to the tournament would be staying in Hamilton, which would get all the benefit. Cr Church said that the players came out of their offices in Hamilton, got into their cars and went along the road to golf, while the farmer, who had to pay the cost all the time, was working up—.(The rest of the sen tenee was lost in roars of laughter.) It was eventually decided that the engineer should arrange to have the grader continuously on the road just, before and during the time the championships were being held. GENERAL MATTERS. In regard to a request by Cr C. E. Fear to have an obstruction removed on Young Street, Pirongia, it was agreed to ask that the fence be removed, the request to stand in abeyance provided a gate was erected, which would suit and meet the wishes of Mr Fear. An invitation to the chairman, councillors and staff and their wives to attend the official opening by the Hon. R. Semple (Minister of Public Works) of the Fairfield bridge at Hamilton on Monday next was received, all present intimating their in tention of attending the function. As the annual statutory meeting o' the Council is to be held on Wednesday, May 26th, it was decided to hold the ordinary monthly meeting on that date. Mr A. B. Allen, secretary to the Te Awamutu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, applied for permission to run the club’s cycling races over the county roads, promising that all by-laws would be strictly adhered to. —The request was granted, at the club’s own risk.
