OTOROHANGA NEWS
TOPICS OF THE HOUR. WAIRERE POWER BOARD. (Our Resident Representative.) The Wairere Electric Power Board, which operates in the southern area of the Waitomo County, has shown a tentative profit of £3OO as a. result of the year’s operations, ending March 31st last. This is a preliminary estimate submitted by Mr S. Aston, the secretary, at Wednesday’s Beard meeting. This result, after losing considerable revenue from sawmills, now removed to the Arohena district in the Northern King Country, was considered quite satisfactory. The trading department shows a profit of £5O. Owing to the increase in wages and other factors, costs had been higher than usual, buf latteYly there were signs of an all-round improvement. The increase in sales of the trading department amounted to £BOO- - about double of that for the previous year.
WONDERFUL PASTURE GROWTH. Favoured by the rainfall of early April a.nd the beautiful autumn weather that has followed, there, is a most prolific pasture growth throughout the countryside. Old settlers are of the considered opinion that never before in late April has there been such a wonderful pasture growth in the Northern King Country. All classes of stock are in fine shape to commence the approaching winter period, and it is considered that many dairy herdsmen will be milking a considerable number of their cows well into the winter months. The winters in this territory usually are not exceptionally harsh and permit many dairymen to milk various units cf their herd all the year round. The large factory of the New Zealand Co-operative Company, and the Waikato Valley dumps at Otorohanga, will be receiving cream for the manufacture of butter throughout the winter months. The present season, here, has been a splendid one for dairymen.
