THE EARLY DAYS

OF THE ARMED CONSTABULARY The early days of the Cambridge district over fifty years ago, when the Armed Constabulary was active, have been recalled by Mr T. Steel, of Pironia, who was a visitor to Cambridge last Monday to attend the funeral of his old friend, Mr G. R. Nickle.

Mr Steel was only a lad at the time when the Armed Constabulary was formed at Pirongia, or Alexandra, as it was called then. His father, Sergeant Steel, and Mr Nickle were very great friends. From Alexandra they moved to Cambridge', and Mr Nickle was one of thirty men selected to go to Parihaka (Taranaki) to quell the Te Whiti rising there. After the trouble ceased the members of the Constabulary worked on the road through the Mamaku bush, and Mr Nickle was the waggoner who took supplies to the camp from Cambridge.

The late Mr Nickle had lived in Cambridge for many years, and was married 37 years ago. Sergeant Steel is at present living in Hamilton.
