PRINCE CONSORT’S TARTAN

During his visit to Scotland the King has been wearing Balmoral instead of Stuart tartan (says a Daily Telegraph writer). The tartan, in which white predominates was designad by his greatgrandfather, the Prince Consort, who never felt so much at home as when he was at Balmoral. The Balmoral tartan cannot be bought in shops. But it is by no means the only tartan of comparatively modern design. Many of them derive from Black Watch tartan, the origin of which is a matter of great dispute. Thus Gordon tartan, invented in 1793, is merely Black Watch tartan with a yellow strip introduced. The tartan for the 10 Scots regiments, five in trews and five in kilt, is jealously preserved by the War Office.
