OTOROHANGA TOWN BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the above Board was held last Thursday evening, when the following members were in attendance: Commissioners F. O. R. Phillips (chairman), A. P. Grey, H. E. Lawrence, A. J. McCready, R. Bell, R. T. Rhodes, and Mr C. Jackson ad P. H. Gosse, town clerk and engineer. It was decided not to screen pictures on November sth, on the occasion of the local Fire Brigade demonstrations. It was decided to place a number of town sections under the jurisdiction of the Works Committee, who will see that all noxious weed growth is eradicated. An application for a 21, years’ lease at a rental of £1 Is per annum, of nine acres of the Domain, was received from local cricket and hockey clubs. The applicants considered that a considerable sum would be required to put the ground in playing order, hence only a small rental was offered and a long lease was required.—The matter was fully considered, and it was decided to arrange for the applicants to meet the Reserves Committee on the ground, in order that a thorough understanding of their requirements may be placed before the Board at its next meeting. The applicants will be asked to propound a scheme for the Improvements required, and the financial arrangements that they propose to employ to carry out the work.
The question of water rates to users on the southern end of the town (but out of the Board’s rating area) was referred to the Finance Committee. It was decided to arrange for the Hall Committee to adjust his salary and commission with Mr O. Tristram, the Board's picture operator, now that a caretaker is employed to do work formerly performed by the operator.
Matters in connection with the proposed sewerage scheme, for a portion of the Board's area, was considered at length. It was considered by several members that the time was not yet opportune for a scheme to serve the whole of the town. The best that can be done under the existing circumstances is to carry out the modified proposals now in train. The procuring of a flame thrower for the burning of noxious weed growth was left to the Works Committee. In the meantime all cut weeds are to be burned forthwith. The Works Committee were instructed to inspect a drain, now in course of construction, in Herehuka Street, with a view to further improvements for the turning of the school buses at the entrance to the D.H. School. It was decided to write the School Committee asking that the buses should be parked in the school grounds during the daytime, instead of on the roadway. It was decided to regrade and remetal the intersection of Maniapoto and Balance Streets.
A section, overgrown with heavy gorse in Herehuka Street, is to be cleared at the expense of the Maori Land Board. The Reserves Committee are to obtain estimates of the cost of mooted improvements to the Cemetery. Taxi proprietors are to be instructed that they must use the ranks allotted to them, and no other position, otherwise prosecutions will follow.
