WHY SOCIALISM WILL FAIL

(Cynicus) With the pronouncement of the Minister of Labour that the objective of the Party is Socialism, this subject is elevated to a position of vital importance in New Zealand,. Whether it is the system advocated by Karl Marx, H. G. Wells, or Mr George Bernard Shaw, the basis of these schools of Socialistic thought is the same. Socialism is the denial of the natural rights of man to private property; it denies the natural right of man to express his individuality by assuming that all men are equal. MAN BEFORE THE STATE. The position to-day is that the, industrial system, has become confluent; we have one intelligence, one conscience, one will. “In the sweat of thy face, thou shalt eat bread.” With this development we have rapacious usury. The Great Master said, “I have compassion on the multitude,” and we have preferred the lower dictum to the higher. Study history and we must conclude that man existed before the State, the life of the body was prior to the formation of a State existence. Our (reasoning must be rational, therefore, any system that contravenes the Natural, or Divine Laws that govern the Universe, must obviously, sooner or later, fail. When man evolved towards a higher state, he cultivated the, soil and thereby impressed his personality on the soil giving him the right to that property. With the advent of the family, further natural rights w,ere created and provision must be made for the upkeep and pursuits of the family. These basic factors are the foundations of human civilisation along every step in human development. By universal consent, they reveal the correct alignment with natural Law. Hence, any deviation from these basic facts must lead to disaster. The whole problem of civilisation to-day, with all its difficulties, worries, and strife can be traced back to the breaking of either, or both, these basic laws. If the reasoning of this argument is true, then any interference by the State on matters concerning private property or individual advancement, is a pernicious mistake. SOCIALISM. Socialism, with its offspring Communism, is a denial of these natural rights. It denies to a man his heritage as a. result of his energy and labour. It denies him the right to educate and enlighten his kith and kin, and to instruct them upon lines that make for the common weal. It denies that sacred liberty to the individual, which is the foundation stone of the British Commonwealth of Nations as represented by the “Union Jack.” Nationalisation of land or wages is against natural law. It is an abuse, an excess, a deordination in human society. THE EQUALITY OF MAN.

Here is another plank in the Socialistic pogramme, the fallacy of human equality; consider the different stages of human growth! Diversities of nations, in climates in civilisations, characteristics, products, etc. Take an example among our own people; certain children are backward, others more adaptable to learning. Men far advanced in arts, skill, sport, business capabilities, engineering, heavy manual labour, etc. All types, sizes, temperaments are joined together in the place that is called New Zealand. If we consider for a moment, the Maori and the Pakeha; the women folk. On the female of the species one could write many pages, yet under socialism, we are all to be stereotyped, standardised. Governments prefer to work along lines of set purposes. They cannot think out national problems except through lines laid down centuries ago. It must be according to procedure, or tradition, or party, or expediency. Generally it is the two latter factors that control the movements of a party government. And the Socialist talks glibly about equality of mankind. Equality of man is contradicted by every fact and indication of human life. THE CAPITALISTIC SYSTEM. Arising out of the compiex state of society is the question of the supplying of man’s needs. So we have developed a system known as an economic system. What is economy? It is the accountancy of household need. Before we can enter into any investigation of the methods employed in solving the question, we must understand exactly what is needed. Domestic economy is the essential factor in the system. What do we require in order that we may live, happily and contentedly? What‘do we need, not desire, in order that our families may receive the greatest benefits that humanity can give us ? Food, clothing, shelter, occupation, leisure, are among the first things that are needed for our communal welfare.

In a scientific economic system, these factors of domestic life are in the first place. Everything else must be subordinated to the necessarywants of man. Therefore, finance must be relative to the life, it must be subordinate to living. Two factors arise in adapting the raw materials to the state of benefit to humanity. The production of goods and the equitable distribution of goods. Man does not live by bread alone, so work should cease on Sundays and Festivals. He is a spiritual being, and hi t s tenure of life is conditioned by obligations to a supreme Power. 16 to 18 hours a day in work is contrary to natpral and Christian Law. Natural justice demands a fair deal between them all. The 'recklessness of the employed, and the covetousness of the employer have produced a bad harvest throughout many 1 decades. Why ? Because the original Laws laid down by the Creator have been broken. Capital consists of two factors, finance and labour. The first is dead capital; siver and gold. The second is live capital; strength and skill. The first being the avenue of exchange, the attack by the socialist upon this factor is, at once, destructive, The Socialist thinks superficially, he sees errors, he detects tyranny, he discovers slavery and exploitation; yet, the first thing he desires to do is to destroy. And when he has destroyed, he will realise that he has not cut away the evil. Cooperation of both factors are necessary for production and consumption. No amount of State control, no amount of taxation upon the rich will exterminate the evil of the present system. Leaving out, as they do, the fundamental laws of God, how can they succeed?
