HOMEWORK
THE TEACHERS RESPONSIBLE. Few people realise how often the teachers’ explanations fail to reach the mind ot the child either through its inattention or lack of brain power. The parent can often make up for tire deficiency ot the teacher. It is in secondary schools that homework often becomes excessive. Nowadays a pupil b.as four or five teachers in different subjects, and there is a struggle as to whc can - get most homework done. Mathematics often wins the contest, as unless something is put on papei- it is obvious that the work has been neglected. History and languages, unless written, can be avoided more easily, and those who can secure a hurried translation from a friend can often escape rebuke without too much effort. Most parents do not attempt to deal with secondary subjects in which they are not strong. In many secondary schools the homework set is too great.—Taranaki Herald.
