“BLASPHEMOUS MOCKERY’.” Sir,—After reading in Monday’s issue the fanatical outburst of the Rev. Coldham Fussell one ceases to wonder why the church is losing its grip on the people. In the last analysis we are all the product of its teachings. The church and the school have made us what we are to-day. Truly there are more ways of killing a cat than choking it with butter. Similarly there are more ways than one of converting “ blasphemous mockers ” to good Christians. But the method adopted by the vicar of St. John’s is certainly a novel one. To refer to a few care-free revellers as. “ disgustingly low,” and to compare them with the murderers of Christ, is scarcely a method calculated to bring these “ sinners ” into the fold presided over .by the reverend gentleman. As one who was present at the “ burial ” I can assure your readers that I heard not one word of criticism of the whole show. Everyone voted it excellent, and I am sure the majority of them were as good, if not bigger and better-hearted, men and women than the vicar of St. John'r. Every person who attended the “ service ” knew of its nature beforehand (more or less), and those who did not approve any such mock burial, or christening were not compelled to attend. It was not necessary for the committee to appeal for a congregation: they came eagerly, and gave readily.—l am. etc.. REVELLER...
